Why I Dodge Group Conversations

Groups have never been my thing, I have never found it enjoyable to talk to more than maybe 4 people at a time. This morning, I found myself reclusive at the hostel and chose to just do my own thing rather than join a table of people. Here is a brief summary of why I avoid these giant groups.

In conversations, people are going to gravitate to whatever the common denominator is. I am not going to talk someone’s ear off about pizza if they can’t eat gluten. People find whatever is in common and talk about it. Any two people can usually find at least something interesting to babble about.

However, the bigger the group, the less everyone will have in common. This effect grows rapidly until you have a group of 10 people that can’t find any commonality beyond liking beer and vacations. Group activities such as a running club can mitigate this, since everyone for sure will be into running. However, you will still probably be locked into talking about 5k’s and the weather.
