Alright I’ll keep this one brief because Denver feels like a less unique Portland. I have no clue if that is a good or bad thing. My overall complaints about both cities are pretty much the same, so read my review of Portland if you want more depth. I am going to keep this one brief.
Official City Review List
Car Independence: 3 / 10
There is some streetcar rail thing being made here, but right now all they got are busses. The city is very spread out and overrun with opiate guys so you should take shelter in your Civic. Multiple crazy people on the bus and the bus driver had to slam the door on some trying to barge in.
Public Spaces & Social: 2 / 10
The two libraries I went to could pass for homeless shelters. Don’t feel safe. Decent amount of yelling heard throughout the day. There’s a mid park.
Obviously, most homeless in the US are sleeping in their cars or tents briefly trying to climb out of a bad situation. They aren’t the issue, my heart goes out to them. The issue is this new breed of super-homeless. Drugs paired with mental issues make these people a constant threat to everybody. Their brains simply are not rational anymore, so they are completely unpredictable. Many states are now refusing to put people in jails because of drugs, but I truly think everybody would be better off if these guys were put in a jail cell instead of overdosing on the sidewalk. We should aim to give them a better environment than jail, but we are going in the wrong direction.
In Europe, there were a decent amount of homeless. However, they do not have an opioid epidemic because their healthcare industry isn’t pure evil. There was the occasional drunk, but even that is relatively tame. I never felt very unsafe in any part of Europe. This was while living in a city for a year, I didn’t just visit the Louvre and Big Ben for a week.
Job Opportunity: 2 / 10
Don’t trap yourself here with a job.
People & Culture: 3 / 10
This is pretty comparable to Portland. Portland has it’s own microclimate of weirdness I’ve never seen anywhere else. Denver has a ton of conventional stoners and drugees, more bearable but less interesting. Churches were pretty empty here and both cities got a surprising amount of people with pentagram tattoos.
Also, can we go back to stoners just being losers again. I don’t know if it’s because of Joe Rogan or what, but there is this growing fallacy that they are kind of interesting and do karate and all that. Every true stoner I ever met has been lame and their culture is corny.
Outdoors & Weather: 4 / 10
There really isn’t much out here. I thought nature would be cooler, but the east coast wins hands down. Hard to enjoy time in parks here and the public spaces are underwhelming to me.
Price & Value: 3 / 10
I’d rather be in any suburb.
Overall: 17 / 60
What is the appeal of this place? I feel like I heard so much hype about Denver. It is right down there with Portland and Atlanta.
